Littlehampton Town came from behind to knock fellow Isthmian South East side Lancing out of the Sussex Transport Senior Cup on Tuesday evening.
On a night where temperatures dropped quite considerably as the game wore on the Golds took the plaudits and moved into the semi finals.
With both sides lacking numbers due to players being unavailable or cup-tied the tie always looked to be a tight affair and so it proved across the 90 minutes.
Lancers were the first to show taking the lead in the 13th minute, a nice move ending with the ball at the feet of Harry Heath 20 yards out, the striker stroking the ball home past Mac Chisholm into the bottom corner for the opening goal.
Town’s best play was coming down their right hand flank, with Ryan Yoro-Thomas’ pace causing problems but couldn’t find a Golds shirt in the penalty area.
The home side did draw level in the 27th minute, Scott Kirkwood’s corner from the left hand side evaded everyone inside the penalty area and curled into the net at the far post.
Littlehampton had the better of the attacking prowess in the second half and they took the lead on 58 minutes in slightly controversial circumstances.
Lancing keeper James Dillion was clipped by Town’s George Gaskin as he cleared a through ball outside his area, the ball ending up out of play as Gaskin’s initial touch hit Dillion before catching the striker on the way out of play.
Initially given by both the referee and assistant as a Lancing throw, they changed their minds after treatment, Town working the ball across the penalty area from the set piece where Gaskin set himself to stroke home his side’s second goal.
The Lancers had the opportunity to level the tie on 75 minutes, Heath’s straight down the middle penalty saved by the outstretched foot of Chisholm.
The visitors struggled to create clear cut chances amidst a few penalty shouts and the hosts worked hard on the counter attack as Lancing left space trying to find the equaliser but to no avail as Town went forward into the next round in front of a chilly crowd of 118.
