Haywards Heath Town stayed top of the Southern Combination Premier Division with a hard fought win over Roffey on Bank Holiday Monday morning.

Town had to be patient against a dogged Boars side but eventually found a second half breakthrough from skipper Jack Barnes.

Either side of that goal, the visitors were indebted to keeper Monty Watson-Price with a string of fine saves that prevented a much higher margin of victory.

The home side did most of the first half pressing, but when Roffey did break Jordan Mase was at the heart of everything going forward.

Town should have been in front just before the break, Mark Goldson put clean through, his effort straight at Watson-Price, out to narrow the angle.

The goal did finally come just after the hour mark, Barnes’ penalty tipped onto the bar by Watson-Price, but the Town captain firing home the rebound.

Lloyd Francis hit the bar late on after four or five good saves from the Roffey keeper as Town could and should have added to their tally, one goal in the end was good enough.
