Members of Roffey FC spent two days last week cycling from Bartholomew Way to raise funds for cancer stricken player Kelvin Lucas.
The popular striker who has turned out for a number of clubs across Sussex is being treated for bowel and liver cancer but is positively attacking the disease despite the gruelling and intense rounds of Chemotherapy and Radiography.
Five of the The Boards left the club HQ on Thursday ahead of a journey over 48 hours taking in 20 of the clubs across Sussex. By the end of day one they had called in at Crowborough Athletic, AFC Uckfield Town, Eastbourne Utd AFC, Eastbourne Town, Seaford Town, Newhaven, Peacehaven & Tel, Saltdean Utd, Shoreham, and finishing up at Steyning Town notching up 102 miles in the process.
After an overnight stop off, the boys headed to Lancing to take in Montpelier Villa, and onwards west to Worthing Utd, East Preston, Wick, Arundel, Storrington, Billingshurst, Loxwood, Alfold and Horsham YMCA before arriving back at Roffey in the early evening after covering 162 miles across the two days, greeted by Kelvin as they crossed the finish line.
Lucas has currently undergone 12 rounds of chemo and 5 of radio therapy with a scan due at the end of August to see how effective it has been against the tumour.
To remove the tumour Lucas will have to take three months off treatment with the hope it doesn’t spread further but the 36 year old is extremely positive things will return to normal for the popular player.
The club has been phenomenal for Lucas and he praised Jack, Phil and Phil’s wife Helen who provided help for him to go private after running into an NHS brick wall and turned away from A&E with a constipation diagnosis.
The huge support from the footballing family was extended on Saturday as FA Cup opponents Deal Town split half of their 50/50 draw into his Go Fund Me page, his two children, Ella (10) and Tommy (4), giving him every inch to fight for.
He heaped praise on the five guys who spent two days cycling across Sussex to raise funds for himself and awareness of bowel cancer in young people, something Lucas was told he was too young to contract given his age.
If you would like to donate to Kelvin’s cause the link is here, no amount is ever too small to give, it’s all appreciated however much you can contribute.
