Haywards Heath Town picked up the first senior cup of the campaign on Wednesday as they beat Worthing Utd 3-0. The Sussex RUR Charity Cup headed to Mid Sussex by full time with all the damage done in the first half.
After a sprightly start from Utd, Heath took control of the final midway through the first 45 minutes and a devastating six minute spell put them firmly in control.
First to find the back of the net on 24 minutes was Brannon O’Neil, unselfishly set up by Harry Shooman, and the experienced midfielder made no mistake.
No sooner had the first goal arrived, Heath made it two as a delightful cross into the box from Nathan Da Costa found the head of Mark Goldson and his effort squirming under the Utd keeper Bako Xhemal and over the line.
With Utd reeling from the double blow and needing some composure, Heath turned the screw on the half hour mark and when Jack Barnes curled in a superb cross Shooman made no mistake with the header for a commanding half time lead.
Utd to their credit gave it a good go in the second half and had one or two opportunities to get themselves back into the match but either ended up high or wide of the target.
Heath had their own chances, Goldson clipping the ball over the bar from six yards out and Shooman’s one on one effort saved by Xhemal, the cup heading north with the Premier Division side.
Both sides have crucial last league games this coming weekend, Heath travel to Eastbourne Utd (ko 2pm) hoping Seaford Town can do them a favour and halt Steyning Town’s run to the title whilst Utd host the Division One champions Godalming Town (ko 3pm) and needing the points for a home semi-final play off place.
