Bexhill Utd rued their missed chances as they were held to a goal less draw on the opening day of the Southern Combination Premier Division season.

Another stunning sunny day in Sussex saw The Pirates heading to Eastbourne Town’s Saffrons ground for their first league start.

It was definitely more cricket weather than football and with Town’s ground backing onto the summer sport’s outfield fans were treated to both games at the same time. Town were hosting Bexhill who are unable to play at the Polegrove until mid-September due to their own cricket team completing their East Sussex season.

All credit to Eastbourne Town who proved to be great hosts and their ground staff produced a very decent playing surface despite the months of dry weather.

The Pirates were in early control of the game and an early long range shot from Charlie Curran wasn’t too far from the top corner as Bexhill pinged the ball about and carved open several clear cut chances but couldn’t find a way through before half time.

Jaan Stanley and Ryan Moir put in great shifts down the flanks and carried on that work into the second half. At the back the home side were rock solid and Stef Akras was rarely troubled in the Pirates goal.

But at the other end a goal wouldn’t come frustrating Bexhill fans, players and management alike as three points in the opening fixture always helps settle things down as the season opens up.

In the dying minutes Midhurst had a penalty shout waved away which resulted in the Stags manager sent from the dug out.

The Pirates have a quick turnaround this week as they head to Newhaven FC on Monday evening to face AFC Varndeanians whilst this coming weekend they host Step 4 Raynes Park Vale in the Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round which once again will be played at The Saffrons ground, ko 3pm.
