Steyning Town and Haywards Heath Town had to settle for a point each on Christmas Saturday afternoon in the Southern Combination Premier Division.
The second placed hosts outgunned the leaders in the first half but were pegged back in the second 45 as Heath turned the screw and could have come away with the win.
The Barrowmen made all the first half running as Heath struggled to find any kind of rhythm in their play. A bitterly cold afternoon greeted the over 400 strong crowd as Steyning sought to close the gap on what’s been an impressive first half of the season for both sides so far.
The opening goal however didn’t arrive until the 33rd minute, Conrad Honore firing hard past Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke to give the hosts a half time lead.
The interval team talk certainly sparked the visitors into life with more movement and purpose around their play and they were level within minutes of the restart, Nathan Da Costa scoring the equaliser.
The game looked more like a reversal of the first half with Heath looking more likely to add to the scoreline as the Barrowmen struggled to get themselves up the pitch.
With neither side able to find a winner they settled on a draw, possibly a better result for the visitors than it was for the chasing hosts.
