The first local bragging rights of the season went the way of the Golds on Wednesday evening as a goal in each half secured a second league win in a row for Littlehampton Town.
After opening weekend wins for both sides in the Isthmian South Central Division, confidence would have been high going into the game in front of a huge midweek crowd.
979 were in attendance but a game lacking in chances meant little action for the paying public.
The Rocks thought they found a way through on 15 minutes, George Britton’s effort coming back off the post but four minutes later they were behind.
As the Golds poured forward in search of the opener a blocked shot looped up perfectly for Zion McLeod who cut back inside and curled the ball past Mac Chisholm for the first goal of the game.
Despite the game being very open neither side kept the ball for long nor created clear goal scoring opportunities. The game threatened to boil over minutes before half time as Dave Herbert was booked for a late challenge on Harvey Whyte, tempers flaring in the tunnel as the players went in for half time.
That feistiness and needle continued throughout the second half but 22 players remained on the pitch, the official’s patience tested to the limit.
Eighteen minutes from time the Rocks looked as if they’d found an equaliser but a superb one handed save from Billy Collings denied Joe Alman his goal.
The Golds thought they were clear scoring again in the final ten minutes but McLeod was rightly flagged offside. However, the striker did bag his second deep into stoppage time.
With Littlehampton playing deep on the counter attack a long ball out from the back found substitute Oscar Johnston, his ball inside finding McLeod in space and his shot well placed beyond Chisholm to continue Littlehampton’s perfect start to the season.
