Lewes FC boss Craig Nelson has been pleased with the Rooks start to the season but knows they face a tough battle to maintain that form as the season progresses.

Nelson has seen his win all three of their opening fixtures, the only side to do so in the Isthmian League Premier Division but is under no illusions that nothing is won in August.

‘It would be great to win every game but that’s an unreal expectation! We’ve been asked by the club to set the foundations to for the future and punch above it.’

‘The aim is to remain competitive but there is no expectation from above where to finish.’

Nelson stepped up to Step 3 after leaving Southern Counties East side Glebe before the end of the season having led them to the brink of the play-offs after leading the table for a majority of the season.

‘The football bit doesn’t change from that perspective despite a difference in levels. However, the structure of the club, the fans, the governance around what we do and how is massive.’

‘Those added layers have been eye opening for me but I love it, the club and people around it have been unreal and so supportive , I am really enjoying it so far.’

Despite the good start, Nelson has his feet on the ground like his players when it comes to when it comes to taking and dishing out praise.

‘We have a good group of boys here and they’re working hard to get things right, the wins are a bonus for their hard work. There are still things to correct even in these past three games but the group have found different ways to win which is testament to them.’

Nelson hasn’t gone beyond the next game for looking to see where his side can be, knowing there is still so much football to be played.

‘The pressure is off at the moment, but we can’t rest on what we’ve done so far. We must look forward to each game and keep building brick by brick.’

‘It’s too early in the season to be casting predication or expectation, we just need to keep doing what we’re doing.’

The Rooks squad has shaped up nicely over the summer but that hasn’t stopped Nelson from keeping his eyes on events outside the club.

‘I’m quite happy with the players here at the moment but we’ve got a couple of injuries that might turn out to be long term so we might to have a look around and see who we can bring in or dip into the loan market.’
