Burgess Hill Town extended their Isthmian League South East Division record to one defeat in 24 matches on Saturday afternoon as they brushed aside hosts Steyning Town.

The Hillians led by two goals to nil at half time and although comfortable throughout the second half, any half chance for the home side could have made for a nervy finish.

Spring sunshine made a nice backdrop for two sides at differing ends of the table and it was the visitors who controlled possession and the early running.

They opened the scoring on 18 minutes, skipper Brannon O’Neil finding the target after the ball landed at his feet via a deflection.

Eight minutes later the lead was doubled, the impressive Chris Whelpdale prodding home from a few yards out after Barrowmen keeper Nathan Stromberg-Clarke couldn’t keep hold of a high hanging ball.

The second half saw a couple of tactical tweaks from the home side and they looked a little more threatening, however Ollie Rawlins was left too isolated for Steyning to make any inroads.

A combination of the Barrowmen’s intent to try and reduce the deficit plus some wayward shooting from the visitors kept the score at two until the final minute when Whelpdale teed up Bobby Price to fire home to make it 14 away games unbeaten for the Hillians and a strengthening of their play off position.

Hill are in action again on Tuesday evening as they travel to East Grinstead Town (ko 7.30pm) and host leaders Ramsgate on Saturday, Steyning heading to Sevenoaks Town at the weekend.
