With kind permission from Pagham FC we’re re-creating the positive article from their Twitter account following their weekend trip to play Guernsey.
Have a read how it all unfolded for them below:
When Guernsey joined the Southern Combination League, few could have predicted just how much it would mean to the clubs involved. For most teams the chance to travel off the mainland to play a league fixture feels like a-once-in-a-lifetime-event, a ‘cup final experience’ that brings the whole club closer together.
It’s not just another away day, it’s something special from the moment the fixture list is released, everyone circles Guernsey (A) in red ink. The planning starts early, logistics, flights, hotels, and most importantly the excitement, it’s football but with a touch of adventure.
As a club we knew we wouldn’t get opportunities like this often, so we went all in. The club paid for the whole squad and management to stay overnight on the island after the game. Guernsey even helped by sorting our flights home the following day.
The experience doesn’t stop at the final whistle. Win, lose or draw it becomes a memory shared between players, coaches, fans, and committee members – a reminder of why we all love non-league football. The camaraderie off the pitch can be just as valuable as the three points on it.
For this particular club, victory made the trip even sweeter, but the bigger prize was the togetherness it created.
‘We did win – that made it that bit sweeter – but even if you don’t, do it right, do it well, and it can be huge for your club.’
Guernsey’s inclusion has given every team in the Southern Combination Football League the chance to feel part of something bigger. It’s an adventure, a celebration, and a connection that goes beyond football.
Every team get’s their own ‘cup final day’ and that’s a gift the league will cherish for years to come.
