Worthing bowed out of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday afternoon despite harbouring hopes of an upset before kick off.

Only 29 places separated the two sides before kick off, the Rebels came into the game on a run of two defeats in their last ten matches whilst the League Two side have endured a torrid start to the season sitting in the bottom two after picking up only seven points from a possible 42 on offer.

Despite needing to adapt quickly to the 3G surface, the Shrimps were in front after only seven minutes. A long throw in resulted in a Jordan Slew thunderbolt flying past Chris Haigh in the Worthing net and the game’s opening goal.

The Rebels had their chances to get back into the game, Nicky Wheeler drawing a fine save from the Morecambe keeper after 25 minutes and Joe Cook firing over the bar from the edge of the penalty area the best of the first half opportunities, the home side probably feeling they should at least have been level or in front.

Chances came and went again for the hosts, Tommy Willard with a shot blocked whilst Glenn Rea’s overhead kick was brilliantly saved, Danny Cashman’s header straight at the keeper gave the home fans hope their side could draw level.

Sam Beard was next to try his luck from 12 yards out, but his effort deflected behind for a corner. As the Rebels pushed forward in search of their equaliser, the visitors wrapped up the tie in the 88th minute, Rhys Williams heading home at the back post.

Worthing boss Chris Agutter will no doubt feel his side had enough chances to at least take the tie to penalties, the fine margins in the two division gap when taking the opportunities to find the back of the net, the record crowd of 3,110 a further sign of the growth in Worthing FC.
